Alexey Vermeulen's Journey to the Lifetime Grand Prix Podium

August 20, 2024 / Athlete News

Cycling enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement as Alexey Vermeulen continues to make waves in the Gravel and XC endurance US racing circuit. With a string of impressive performances, including second place finishes at the Sea Otter Classic and the Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) San Diego, Vermeulen is poised to secure his place at the top of the podium.

A Season of Stellar Performances

Vermeulen's 2024 season has been marked by exceptional achievements that highlight his dedication, skill and competitive spirit:

Sea Otter Classic: Vermeulen kicked off the year with a remarkable second-place finish, showcasing his endurance and strategic racing prowess. Reflecting on his performance, Vermeulen said, "After 2023's Sea Otter Classic, I told myself it was do or die to be top 5 into the single track 1/2 a mile into the race. After that the race would begin for real."

Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego: In another outstanding performance, Vermeulen secured second place. He remarked, "Rarely is second place the goal as a professional athlete, but I have learned how great second place can feel if you did everything right and it just wasn't the perfect day. Consistency is very difficult as an elite athlete and I am really proud of the last two weekends!" He added, "There were moments where I started to believe I could catch him and win again, but alas with about 4 miles to go at the top of Double Peak, I ran out of time and road."

Anticipation Built for Leadville 100 MTB

As the Leadville 100 MTB race approached, the excitement and anticipation were palpable. Known for its grueling course and challenging terrain, the Leadville 100 was a true test of endurance and skill. Vermeulen's recent performances had positioned him as a strong favorite, and fans were eager to see if he could clinch the top spot. This iconic race presented the ultimate challenge for Vermeulen as he aimed for victory. Despite giving it his all, Alexey was unable to secure a top position. Nevertheless, this setback serves as a motivation to push even harder in the remaining races of the series.
